Why Levantine?

Learning a language is always about engaging with the community and getting a true sense of what that language represents to locals, and how they interact on a daily basis. That’s why we chose for our course the Levantine dialect, one of the six main varieties of colloquial Arabic spoken across the Arab world, as it is the main vernacular spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Compared to the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), used more formally, Levantine dialect is easier to pronounce and understand, widely spoken, and more accessible, being adopted by most of the art and cultural movements in the Arab world.

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for students who have completed Level B1-4 or have a strong intermediate proficiency in Arabic and wish to engage in deeper, more nuanced discussions about travel, identity, and culture — all while continuing to build confidence and fluency in Levantine Arabic.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss tourism and cultural exchange from multiple perspectives, including the impact of tourism on local communities.

  • Identify and reflect on cultural misunderstandings between locals and tourists, and describe how language, behavior, and expectations play a role.

  • Talk about the emotional connection between food, childhood memories, and cultural identity using descriptive language and storytelling.

Content Right Column:

  • Explore the revival of traditional crafts, clothing, and heritage industries in the Arab world, and discuss their cultural significance.
  • Compare cultural norms across countries and express your opinions on etiquette, customs, and cross-cultural experiences.

  • Use advanced descriptive and narrative structures, including relative clauses, connectors, and embedded sentences.

  • Develop your listening and speaking skills through interactive dialogue, peer discussions, and authentic media.

  • Analyze texts and audio materials for tone, intention, and cultural nuance.
