Why us?

Learning Arabic was never easier! Online access to our digital classes through Alsharq REISE allows learning your favourite language from the comfort of your home. We meet once a week to have a closer look at Arabic together, learn about the language's history, alphabet, and guide you smoothly to reading, writing, and speaking one of the most poetic languages known.

What should you expect?

This level will focus on enriching your language capabilities with more specialized topics and terminology to help you better present yourself and engage with the surrounding community. The first focus areas related to your daily life, whether it is visiting a doctor and describing your symptoms accurately, planning and discussing house chores using the correct verbs, or giving orders using the imperative tense. The second area is a prelude to richer and deeper discussions on  socio-political matters planned for the next levels. In this level we will aim at introducing some terminology, vocabs, and verbs to your Arabic-language repository utilizing a variety of political and social topics from the Arab Spring context as our learning base. Meanwhile, we will continue to refresh your tenses’ knowledge, further improve your sentence structure and introduce you to the disconnected object pronouns concept, among others.

What are the learning objectives?

Now is the start of your journey in the intermediate Arabic levels! So far you have learned how to greet, introduce yourself, talk about your job and interests and carry out a meaningful conversation, in addition to shopping around the local market. By the end of this level, you will move from being reactive to proactive in conversations. We plan on helping you direct orders using the imperative tense, expand your object pronouns base, and be able to engage in preliminary exchanges about the current societal and political issues of the Arab world while sipping the morning coffee with the political analysts neighbours of your neighbourhood.

  • Use the imperative tense and linking it to the connected subject pronouns.
  • Be able to name different body parts.
  • Be able to describe physical symptoms at a doctor appointment using the necessary verbs.
  • Describe different house chores: vocabulary and verbs. Learn new popular Arab proverbs and quotes useful for daily situations.
  • Converse about the Arab Spring: various political and social topics to introduce political terminology and related verbs.

Why Levantine?

Learning a language is always about engaging with the community and getting a true sense of what that language represents to locals, and how they interact on a daily basis. That’s why we chose for our course the Levantine dialect, one of the six main varieties of colloquial Arabic spoken across the Arab world, as it is the main vernacular spoken in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan. Compared to the Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), used more formally, Levantine dialect is easier to pronounce and understand, widely spoken, and more accessible, being adopted by most of the art and cultural movements in the Arab world. We teach you a language you can use with your friends, not the one required to do your PhD!

Information about the course

By booking this language course, you are choosing a 10-week group language course, which will take place digitally once a week. It starts on Monday, April 15, from 18:30 to 20:00 (CET). Then there are 9 more sessions, every Monday, at the same time.

The course officially ends on June 17th with a small final test.

Participation in the course takes place via Zoom, a digital meeting system. We recommend downloading the app, but you can also dial in via your browser. You will receive the dial-in data after booking as part of a detailed preparatory email.
