Lebanon: Revolution, Refugees, Bankruptcy – and now Corona
Ihr interessiert Euch für Politik und Gesellschaft im Libanon? Ihr habt zwar von der Revolution, der Vielzahl an Flüchtlingen aus dem Nachbarland Syrien oder dem Staatsbankrott gehört, würdet aber gerne mehr wissen? Euch liegen Fragen zum „Zedernstaat" auf der Zunge? Ihr findet auch, dass es keine dummen Fragen gibt? Dann seid Ihr bei unserem virtuellen Besuch im Libanon, bei dem wir euch ins Gespräch mit Experten und Aktivisten vor Ort bringen, genau richtig.
Der Libanon war die letzten zehn Jahre beeindruckend konstant in seiner instabilen Verfassung. Trotz einer unfähigen korrupten politischen Elite, finanzieller Schieflage, konfessioneller Spannungen und den schwerwiegenden Auswirkungen des Syrienkriegs blieb es bemerkenswert ruhig im Zedernstaat.
2019/2020 brachte dafür umso mehr Veränderung. Zunächst im Herbst der Aufstand Hunderttausender gegen soziale Ungerechtigkeit, wirtschaftliche Not, Dreistigkeit der alten Politiker und ein überkommenes System. Dann der weitgehende Kollaps des Finanzsystems. Und nun der Umgang mit dem Corona-Virus, dem die Entscheidungsträger mit restriktiven Maßnahmen begegnen.
In unserer gut 90-minütigen Veranstaltung wollen wir uns von verschiedenen Seiten einem unfassbar vielfältigen Land widmen, in dem sowohl unterschiedlichste soziale Schichten als auch Lebensentwürfe nebeneinander existieren.
Wir haben bei unserer virtuellen Pilot-Veranstaltung viel konstruktives Feedback erhalten, das wir nun umsetzen werden. Die Veranstaltung wird vielfältiger an Formaten werden, von Bilderstrecken über kurzweilige Präsentationen und Videos von Menschen vor Ort bis hin zu Live-Inputs von Aktivist*innen im Libanon. Erneut habt Ihr die Möglichkeit, Eure Fragen per Chat-Funktion über Zoom oder Facebook zu stellen.

19:35 Uhr: Einführende Kurz-Präsentation zu Politik, Gesellschaft und zur jüngeren Geschichte des Libanon von Moderator Christoph Dinkelaker
19:50 Uhr: Live-Schalte nach Beirut: Die Politikwissenschaftlerin Ginan Osman, die die Proteste der letzten fünf Monate begleitet hat, wird uns einen persönlichen Einblick zur Revolution und zum Leben in Corona-Zeiten geben. Anschließend stellen wir ihr Eure Fragen.

Lebanon: Revolution, Refugees, Bankruptcy – and now Corona
Are you interested in the politics and society in Lebanon? You have heard about the revolution, the large number of refugees from neighbouring Syria or the looming state bankruptcy, but would like to know more? Do you have questions about the "cedar state" on the tip of your tongue? You agree that there’s no such thing as stupid questions? Then our virtual visit to Lebanon, during which we will put you in touch with local experts and activists, is just the right thing for you.
Over the past ten years, Lebanon has been impressively consistent in its unstable condition. Despite an incompetent and corrupt political elite, financial imbalances, sectarian tensions and the severe effects of the war in Syria, things have remained remarkably calm in the Cedar state.
2019/2020 brought all the more change. In autumn, everything began with the uprising of hundreds of thousands of people protesting against social injustice, economic hardship, the impudence of old politicians and an outdated sectarian system. The collapse of the financial system accelerated parallelly and now the handling of the corona virus, which the decision-makers countered with restrictive measures, adds another layer of insecurity in the country.
In our 90-minute event, we will have a closer look at this incredibly diverse country in which so many different social classes and life designs coexist on a tiny territory.
After our first virtual event, we received a lot of constructive feedback, which we have taken into consideration while conceptualizing a virtual visit to Lebanon. The event will be more diverse in format, ranging from photo galleries, short presentations, clips from Lebanon, to live input by activists. Once again, you will have the opportunity to ask your questions using the chat function via Zoom or Facebook.
